Wednesday 25 August
The South West (WA) Local Government Association
(SWWALGA) is holding its inaugural construction and demolition (C&D)
waste seminar on Thursday 16 September at Bridgetown.
The seminar will summarise the current status and
identify alternative markets in the south west for the C&D waste
stream.
Samantha Reece, South West Recycling Co-ordinator
said that currently construction and demolition waste represented
about 30% of the waste stream being directed to landfill.
"A study that was conducted by environmental consultants
Ecotones in August 1998 indicated that up to 75% of this waste could
be recycled," Ms Reece said.
"The unfortunate reality is that only about 20% is
actually being diverted and reused in the south west. "With building
and demolition on the increase in the region it is important that
we identify other productive uses for C&D waste.
"This seminar will help identify new areas of research
and applications for this product that will produce environmentally
friendly results, localised employment and increased revenue."
Speakers at the seminar will include representatives
from Master Builders Association, Housing Industry Association,
Department of Environmental Protection and businesses that are currently
operating in the C&D market. Businesses dealing with concrete, building,
waste removal and local government are urged to register for this
half day seminar.
