Worms Galore, winner of the recent 1999 State Recycling
and Waste Management Awards, is introducing an unique educational
service for young students in the south west.
Teacher and Worms Galore General Manager, Carmel Breman,
has established a series of booklets and lessons which inform students
(K-7) of the important role that worms play in our environment.
Through a hands on practical workshop, Carmel reinforces
the different types of worms, their specific jobs and demonstrates
how to establish a working worm farm within the school grounds.
A number of schools in the south west have already
benefited from Carmels practical and special approach to recycling
and worm farming.
"Students and teachers are unaware of how easy it
is to introduce an effective worm farm within the school grounds,"
Carmel said.
"By diverting organic waste from the bin to the worm
farms, the schools are able to generate a fertiliser which is then
beneficial for their gardens and lawns.
"Furthermore, the level of appreciation and respect
that these students exhibit in relation to the worms is fantastic
and assists with a long term understanding of how we can all help
to keep the environment safe."
Carmel is now planning to expand her resources to
include a website, CD and video which can be implemented in the
classroom as well as stocked at nurseries and hardware stores.
