Friday 9 July
The South West (WA) Local Government Association (SWWALGA)
is calling for nominations for the annual 3R Awards (reduce-reuse-recycle)
from environmentally conscious businesses, schools, local government
and community groups.
The awards provide financial reward and recognition
to those organisations who have developed or implemented programmes
which have reduced or diverted waste, conserved resources as well
as enhanced employment opportunities.
South west recycling co-ordinator Samantha Reece said
that the awards would ensure that the "quiet achievers" in the community
would gain recognition for their admirable work and programmes.
"Despite our unique circumstances, the south west
has been able to overcome distance and resource issues to maintain
a strong recycling ethos," Samantha said.
"Through this community attitude the south west has
become renowned for its proactive stance and innovative waste management
ideas.
"SWWALGA and the south west community are proud to
be able to lend support to these unique and effective programmes
as well as the individuals who are working to make a significant
difference."
The award categories include small and large businesses,
local government, community groups, schools as well as a grant for
research and development.
Nominations close Friday 3 September and the awards
will be presented on Friday 17 September 1999 at Bridgetown Motel,
Bridgetown.
Nomination forms can be collected from SWWALGA on
9791 4699 or from local libraries and council offices. SWWALGA would
like to recognise South Western Times, BHP, Coles Bunbury, South
West Development Commission, Green Recycling, Malatesta Green Waste,
South West Waste Disposals, Millennium Inorganic Chemicals, Sons
of Gwalia and the Bunbury Harvey Regional Council, for their strong
support of the 3R Awards.
